Microchip Technology Wins Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility for Fourth Straight Year
Company Again Receives National Recognition for Business Practices at Awards Ceremony Hosted by Chandler Chamber of Commerce
CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MCHP), a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, today announced it has won the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility for the fourth year in a row. The award distinguishes the employer as one of the top practitioners of workplace flexibility in the nation.
The Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility are part of the When Work Works project, an ongoing initiative of the Families and Work Institute, the Institute for a Competitive Workforce (ICW)--an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Twiga Foundation, which is designed to recognize businesses that are dedicated to making work "work" for the employer and the employees. Through When Work Works, these partner organizations provide research, resources and recognition to businesses nationwide, and share the results of their research on creating effective and flexible workplaces that meet the needs of the 21st century.
Applications for the Alfred P. Sloan Awards were open to all businesses in Arizona with more than 10 employees that had been in business for at least one year. Applicants were evaluated in a rigorous two-step process, first comparing the employer's application to nationally representative data from the Families and Work Institute's National Study of Employers, and then validating what employers report against employee responses. Winners of this prestigious award not only offer excellent workplace flexibility policies and practices, but they also use flexibility as a strategic business tool to benefit business and employees.
"One of Microchip's guiding values is that employees are our greatest strength," said Lauren Carr, vice president of Global Human Resources for Microchip. "We realize that in order to attract and retain the best talent, we must provide a work environment that promotes teamwork, creativity, integrity and pride in work. The Company benefits from having productive, happy employees who take ownership of their jobs; and the employees benefit from the fact that they own their work and are able to live rich personal lives. It is a win-win situation, and it works!"
Steve Sanghi, Microchip's president and CEO said, "Microchip employees wear their badges IN their hearts, while at most other companies, the employees merely wear their badges ON their hearts. This makes all the difference."
"The When Work Works project was developed in response to decades of research which found that, simply put, work was not 'working' for many businesses and employees as well as it could be," said Ellen Galinsky, president of Families and Work Institute and co-director of the national When Work Works initiative. "In a time of economic volatility, with increasingly complicated jobs and an aging workforce, the importance of the Sloan Awards is greater than ever as a tool to create workplace flexibility that can benefit employers and employees alike."
Arizona is one of only three statewide initiatives chosen, along with 30 local communities, to host and participate in the When Work Works initiative. Each of the 2009 Sloan Award winners will be recognized nationally and will be featured in the 2009 issue of the Guide to Bold New Ideas for Making Work Work, published by the Families and Work Institute.
