Microchip Technology Expands High-Current LDO Family

Low Output Voltage LDOs are Ceramic Capacitor Stable to Enable Smaller, More Efficient Designs

CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MCHP), a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, today announced an expansion of its high-current, ceramic output capacitor-stable low dropout regulator (LDO) family. The 500 milliAmpere (mA) MCP1725 and MCP1825, and 1 Ampere (A) MCP1826 (MCP1725/182X) LDOs are available in packages as small as 2 mm x 3 mm DFN and SOT223. The full-featured LDOs offer a wide range of capabilities, such as shutdown, power good and adjustable power-good delay. The devices add to Microchip's existing portfolio of LDOs, completing its line of low output voltage, high-current LDOs that provide a variety of feature and package options to meet the most challenging design requirements.

Very low output voltages down to 0.8V make the MCP1725/182X LDOs ideal for use with newer FPGAs, ASICs and logic cores, which require ever-decreasing operating voltages. The LDOs are available in thermally capable packages and feature a typical low dropout voltage of 210 - 250 milliVolts, enabling them to be used in a variety of applications over a wide input-/output-voltage range at full current. Additionally, the devices are ceramic output-capacitor stable and have a low quiescent current of just 120 - 140 microAmperes, resulting in smaller, more efficient designs.

"The MCP1725/182X LDOs answer the growing low-voltage needs of newer FPGAs and logic cores, while providing highly competitive current and feature-set choices in power-capable, space-efficient packages," said Bryan Liddiard, vice president of marketing with Microchip's Analog and Interface Products Division.

Mikhail Voronoiuk, product marketing engineer with Microchip's Analog and Interface Products Division, added, "Microchip's complete family of LDOs serves many of today's demanding linear DC/DC voltage-conversion application requirements. We are pleased to announce the expansion of our portfolio of high-performance LDOs."

Device-Specific Features

The MCP1825S and MCP1826S are basic, 3-pin 500 mA and 1 A LDOs, respectively. The MCP1825 and MCP1826 add shutdown and power-good functionality; while the MCP1725 is a full-featured, 500 mA LDO with power-good delay and a sense pin, for better load regulation. The devices add to Microchip's existing portfolio of high-current LDOs, which includes the 1A MCP1726, and the 1.5A MCP1827 and MCP1827S devices. The entire portfolio is ideal for heat and space-constrained consumer and industrial electronic devices that require high currents or low operating voltages. Examples include computer graphic processors, portable video recorders, set-top cable boxes and Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) post-regulators, among others.
